While it is not ideal arthroscopy can be performed on both knees at the same sitting. It will often mean a slightly slower recovery than if you only have one knee operated on and patient will require crutches for a few days longer

Arthroscopy can be performed bilaterally if there is a clinical reason for it to done. This may include sports injuries that occur to both knees at the same time. If both knees require arthroscopy at the same time, there is no reason why they cannot be performed under the same anaesthetic. In general, arthroscopy is a safe and effective operation, with low risks if performed well. Most patients are able to walk immediately after an arthroscopy, which is no different after performing them bilaterally.

Undergoing arthroscopy to both knees at the same time can be a good idea IF there is an independant need for each knee to be treated arthroscopically, your general health is good and you have good supports at home for a few days. Undergoing surgery to both knees at the same time should reduce greatly the time total needed away from work (compared to have each knee treated separately, with a period of recovery between). Patients undergoing arthroscopy of one knee usually are treated and able to be discharged home the same day. If both knees are treated on the same day, it generally best to stay in hospital overnight and be reviewed by a physiotherapist before going home the following morning. This makes sure that there are no problems and you are able to walk and are comfortable.
